The Buchholz Relay is a crucial safety protection device on the Oil Immersed Transformer. It is installed on the joint pipe between the transformer tank cover and the oil conservator. Under the action of the gas or oil flow generated by the internal fault of the transformer, the signal or trip circuit is connected to enable the relevant devices to send alarm signals or remove the transformer from the power grid to protect the transformer.

The gas protection acts quickly and has high sensitivity, which can reflect various short circuit faults in the transformer oil tank, including some minor flaws, such as the slight inter-turn short circuit of windings, iron core burning, etc., but cannot reflect external faults of the oil tank. Therefore, gas protection cannot be used as the primary protection of transformers alone and is usually combined with longitudinal differential protection as the immediate protection of transformers.
